All night long baby!!!

3:10 am…We just finished the 2 am feeding and I have an hour and 30 minutes until the next round begins. These feedings start up every 3 hours. I have 3 volunteers here with me: Karen, her daughter Savana and Marlys. The kids didn’t do well on this feeding. They just didn’t want to wake up and you can only force feed them so much.

Tonight is my first night up for the entire night. Emma and Lauren came home Friday morning. Sorry for the anticlimatic announcement. (Isn’t anticlimactic a $5 word? If not, it should be.) I think back to what a friend told me, “now we’re cookin with grease!” Angela and her mom typically share the 11 pm and the 2 am shifts and then I normally get up at 4:15 to get things started for the 5 am feeding. I got the night off last night so that I could work on Saturday morning and be refreshed. I’ve been trying to write this post for a couple days now, but always had my hands full. So let’s back up a bit.

My parents and Grandparents made a trip up to River Falls from Rock Rapids this week. They got here on Thursday and then had to make the trip back on Friday. I think that they had a good time with the kids, especially my Grandma Lucy.

After dinner on Thursday night, my parents took Meredith back to the hotel with them for a little swimming. She just loves the water.

We got the call on Friday morning that the last two kids were ready to come home. Lauren and Emma had really progressed over the past couple days with their feedings. Angela and her mom left kinda early to go pick em up. While they were gone, my dad and I took the other three to the clinic for their weekly weigh ins. Other than Brook throwing up all over the place in the exam room (Food God, what a mess), the trip went pretty well. I suppose now would be a good time to go over the weights, huh?

Brooklyn – 6 lbs., 7 oz.
Madeline – 6 lbs., 11 oz.
Alex – 6 lbs., 13 oz.
Lauren – 5 lbs., 8 oz.
Emma – 5 lbs., 3 oz.

The long and short of this is: All of our children are home now and HEALTHY! That’s the only thing that we’ve ever asked for.

The volunteers have kicked in to full throttle. We typically have anywhere from 1-3 people with us 24/7. It’s a bit awkward having strangers here all the time. There’s always someone here. They see us at our best and worst. When we get out of bed. We have our meals in front of them. We discipline Meredith in front of them. I don’t think that I’ve done anything too bad yet. However, I would imagine that there’s a sense of hesitation and nervousness with the volunteers too. We’re strangers to them and I’m sure that until they get ot know us a little, they may feel a little weird about things too or I just don’t have a clue what the hell I’m talking about. After all, its after 4 am now and may be a bit “off.” All I know is that we’re all just gonna have to get used to it. There is no way that we would ever be able to make it through the next year (heck, just the next couple weeks) without them. It’ll come…It has too.

So with that said, if you’d like to volunteer, please don’t hesitate to contact one of us by clicking here. If you haven’t attended one of our orientations, no worries, we have another one scheduled for Aug. 30 at 7 pm at the Ezekiel Lutheran Church in River Falls.

It’s now 4:30 am and I need to get Alex ready for his next feeding in 5 minutes. Hopefully his diaper isn’t too bad. Wish me luck!

Until next time…

  2. Heath and Angie, Esther & I had a great time helping out last weekend. We were nervous at first, but you have things under control very well. Your system seems to work just great with all 5 babies at home. We had so much fun, that we are looking forward to coming up to help you again soon. It was interesting meeting your volunteers. Everyone worked well togethier. I hope that you continue to get more volunteers, so you both can get plenty of rest and time with Merideth. She is a cutie. We loved her energy and dances. Your hands are full, but you both are doing a awesome job. Prayers and plenty of rest for all of you…

    Hi Heath:

I can imagine. I took care of triplets for a while…; never ending feeding. We had to paint finger nail polish on their toes to tell them apart.
How is work? Are you off for a while longer?
    Hang in there….
    Marice B.

  4. Hey Marcie,
No polish here. They look quite a bit a like, but Ang and I can tell the difference. What’s the worst that could happen???
Work is fine. I could take off more time, but working this week and maybe next. Will be taking more time in the weeks and months to come.
    Thanks!

  5. Hey Chris,
It is awesome to have all the kids home! They’re all doing really well and gaining tons of weight! Meredith has her days. Some days she is the happiest little girl and some she is just unbearable. I don’t think that the kids are having too much effect on her, but she has her moments. Its tough to tell if its her getting close to being a 2 year old or if her meltdowns are related the kids in some way. No joking aside, we are asking for background checks for everyone. In your case, it isn’t the background check that we’re worried about, but more so that we can keep a record of who’s spending time in our home and helping out. Someday we’ll have a party to recognize and thank everyone for their help and we need some way of tracking who was here. We can’t wait to have some family get to see the kids. Please let us know as soon as you plan on coming so that we can adjust the volunteer schedule accordingly. See you soon!
    Heath

Then I know how to get it out. Pam sure had fun with the kids. I know we will too. If you get to Rocky you could ride back with us. Talk later Cathy

Im sooo glad to hear they are all home! I cant imagine the relief it must be to have all your family safe and secure under one roof. Wish we could get up there to see them. I love it that you guys had quints. When I go to Walmart someone always says “wow you have your hands full!” Now I can say, “no I dont. My cousin just had quints and a 1 year old.”
